Want to create the flavor of the islands in your very own home?
Try this Blue Hawaii Recipe. Next to the Mai Tai, the Blue Hawaii is probably the most famous cocktail on the islands.
The Blue Hawaii was created over 50 years ago right here in Hawaii, when a bartender at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort and Spa by the name of Harry Yee was challenged to concoct a new drink using the latest craze in liqueurs, Blue Curacao. (In case you didn’t know, Blue Curacao is a sweet, intensely blue liqueur that is what gives the Blue Hawaii its trademark color.)
The result was the very yummy, very refreshing Blue Hawaii – and here is the recipe for you to try at home.
Blue Hawaii Recipe
-
3/4 oz. Light Rum
-
3/4 oz. Vodka
-
1/2 oz. Blue Curacao
-
3 oz. Pineapple Juice
-
1 oz. Sweet & Sour Mix
Simply mix well and pour over ice or, if you’d like a frozen version, throw it all in a high-powered blender with some ice, blend, and serve. Don’t forget to garnish with the classic wedge of pineapple and maraschino cherry!
There are lots of variations to the Blue Hawaii, so feel free to experiment to your heart’s content. Popular variations include using Creme de Coconut and/or flavored rums.
Of course, part of the fun of drinking a Blue Hawaii – other than the electric blue color, of course – is the glass you serve it in. Blue Hawaiis can be served as punch or in margarita glasses, tiki mugs, or even Hawaii’s famous coconut shells. The more fun you have with the presentation, the better!
