The Haraguchi Rice Mill Tour: Kauai's Best-Kept Secret?
Are you the kind of traveler who likes to go a little off-the-beaten path? Do you want to discover some of your destination's best-kept secrets?
On Kauai, you definitely don't want to miss that Haraguchi Rice Mill Tour. This little-known tour consistently gets top reviews from the few who manage to secure a spot on this very limited-availability tour.
The Haraguchi Rice Mill Tour consists of a visit to a family owned historic rice mill & taro farm. The taro farm is the largest in the state and the rice mill is the only remaining one in Hawaii. Located on a National Wildlife Refuge, the area is not open to the public - unless you're on one of these great tours.
While on the tour, you'll learn a ton and get to do a lot of neat stuff like scrape the pink eggs of apple snails off the taro, pound poi (and eat it too!), and enjoy a lunch of local favorites including a tropical fruit smoothie.
The tour is run by actual members of the Haraguchi family, who bought the rice mill and farm land in 1924. They've been there ever since. In 2005, the family began conducting tours of the area and have grown this side business almost exclusively by word of mouth.
The tours are led by a real family member who really works these stunning fields. You'll get a real sense of authentic, traditional, and historic Hawaii. Groups are small, so you'll want to make your reservations well in advance. The tours run at 10am on Wednesdays only. Get in touch with us to learn more!
