If you’re a professional surfer, you can skip this post because you already know that North Shore of Oahu boasts the most amazing waves in the world.
BUT if you’re coming to Hawaii and you’re just interested in checking out some surfing, then DO NOT MISS the North Shore of Oahu!
In the summer, Oahu’s North Shore is an innocent-looking stretch of coastline, with gentle waves and warm, inviting water… but during the winter months, the area has some of the biggest, meanest waves on the planet – sometimes as high as 30+ feet! The area is home to some of the world’s biggest surfing competitions and draws competitors and spectators from all over the world.
About an hour’s drive from Waikiki, the North Shore is definitely worth the trip. You will see some absolutely stunning waves between November and February and will probably even spot some surfers working their magic. Don’t forget your camera!
The North Shore of Oahu has over 7 miles of beautiful beaches with lots of sand and gorgeous views. Check out Waimea Bay, Ehukai Beach – site of the legendary Banzai Pipeline – and Sunset Beach. These are all fabulous spots to witness some incredible surfing action.
Please, please, PLEASE note that in the winter months, the North Shore of Oahu is way too dangerous to swim in and can be deadly for even experienced surfers. The huge waves, super strong undertow, and rocks make this an extremely treacherous spot for all but the most experienced surfers. Better for you to simply stay on shore, catch some rays, and witness Mother Nature in all her glory!
